To Begin Again

The signs of spring are beginning to show in the south. The seemingly dead ground is showing new life as the little crocus emerge from slumber. There is a promise of vibrancy as spring overcomes winter. Our struggle with cold weather and indoor confinement is almost at an end. Such is the rhythm of our existence. There are always new beginnings to be discovered. The possibility of change should never be in doubt.

Perhaps the most cruel thing that can be said of a person is that they will never change. I work in the field of addiction recovery. The people that we serve have been frequently accused of this. They are discounted and dismissed. Often, everyone in their lives has given up on them. Our patients are left feeling hopeless and alone. Nothing is as pitiful as those who come to believe that what they hear in this regard is true.  Of course nothing could be further from the truth. Each of us has the capacity for change regardless of the path that we have traveled, the wrongs that we have committed or the damage that we might have done. It is never too late.

It is as important to have hope for people as it is to have faith in the appearance of spring. We do not have to be naïve nor should we allow our expectations to overshadow reality. But we must allow for possibilities. We should be open to miracles. We will then begin to develop an acceptance of God’s ever changing creation and begin to understand that we are not in charge of it.

Winter Solstice

The winter solstice is upon us.  It is the shortest day and the longest night.  The days light has become shorter and shorter since Midsummer and now seems to rise and set in the same place for several days.  For more than seven thousand years human beings have been marking this occasion as the birth of the sun and light.  Life begins anew at Christmas and Hanukkah.  The sun begins it's journey South and creation celebrates.

This is a time to remember the ever turning wheel of life.  Our journey is mixed with darkness and light, struggle and triumph, sadness and joy.  It will never be overcome with the dark but could not be appreciated without it.  We need to honor the presence of grace during both.  One of the ways to acknowledge this truth is to light a candle at the winter solstice.  Take a few minutes to reflect upon your life and its rich flavor of sweet and bitter spice.  Nothing stays forever.  We can be sure that the sun will make its journey back.  The daylight will lengthen.  Spring and Summer will return.

"May peace and plenty be the first to lift the latch on your door and happiness be guided to your home by the candle of Christmas!" ~ An Irish Blessing

Change The World

My best friend and I made the decision to change the world. We were ten years old and thought that adults had no idea how beautiful and interesting it all was. We were concerned about people who were hungry when we had plenty. We thought that war was a fun game but a stupid way to settle arguments. We believed that everyone should have a comfortable home. Fixing those things did not seem unreasonable to us. The reality of mending it all was something different.

The truth is that the world is simply beautiful. The diversity of human beings and the environment is stunning. Each of us has a unique place and purpose. However, there is hunger, thirst, homelessness and war. It is our job to participate in solving those problems. We are called to add our individual voices and effort to bring an end to hopelessness and desperation. There is no excuse for ignoring the plight of the marginalized and oppressed. The most beautiful part of this life is observing and participating in the process of lending a hand to those in need. Our path through the world is a part of it.

Now is the time to change things. This does not happen in grand gestures but in our ongoing daily effort to make a difference. The joy that flows from such action will alter the course of history. We have the power to change the world today.

Expectations & Shakeups

Probably the most amazing thing about Easter and about Recovery is the reversal of expectations. The situation on Good Friday and Holy Saturday is stark and raw. Nothing is going to change this reality. People and their families who are in the whirlwind of addiction can imagine no end to the downward spiral that is smashing and destroying everything in its path. You wake up in the morning with expectations that everything is going to be the same and the most amazing thing has happened. There is an empty tomb. The one who was dead is alive. And even better than that…everything is going to be okay. Better than okay!

Who’d ‘a thunk it? Who would believe it? In one brush stroke the world view changes from black and white to color. It is like the scene from the Wonderful Wizard of Oz when the film changes from Kansas to Munchkinland. Color everywhere. The storm is over. The witch is dead. How did it all happen? The truth is that things had been set in motion for some time but we were unaware. The miracle was waiting for today. The miracle is today.

We respond to this shakeup with awe. The new world at our feet is boundless. The promises are fulfilled in each step forward. Recovery from addiction and salvation from bondage are virtually one in the same. Senator Barack Obama talks about the Audacity of Hope. There is also an Audacity of Easter and an Audacity of Recovery. Life is new and we have the power of change in every step that we take.
