On The Shoulders of Giants

"If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants."
~ Sir Isaac Newton

Booker T. Washington wrote about his experience as a nine year old boy when a United States officer publicly read the Emancipation Proclamation to his enslaved family. He recalled that his mother who was standing by his side, leaned over and kissed her children while tears of joy ran down her cheeks. We have been so fortunate to witness such joy and tears from the descendants of slaves and slaveholders since November 4, 2008 when Barack Obama was elected the 44th President of the United States.

The realization of freedom as envisioned by Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and Lyndon Johnson is being celebrated today. What a great honor to be alive to see and experience this. Millions are gathering in our nations capitol and around the world to be a part of it. We can all savor the moment fully only with the understanding that there is still much more to do. Barack Obama stands on the shoulders of giants. We are there with him.
